The shocking truth is that a woman Veteran is 4 times more likely to be homeless then her fellow male. The tragedy is that Federal programs service the needs of male Veterans. One woman in Phoenix is making a difference and preparing to take her crusade nationwide. Joan Sisco is a former Marine with a mission: provide women Veterans with safe, clean and compassionate shelter. Joan also notes that many homeless women Veterans include a child that is homeless.
Women historically, in our society, move beyond tragedy and difficulty in the best interest of their families. The environment on the battle front our women Veterans have experienced, has stretched that unique female ability to the breaking, as women struggle to be there for their families and themselves. This has resulted in the higher homeless rate in women. These women represent the new era of MIAs, Missing in Assimilation. Let us never forget the sacrifice these women have made for their service.
